Le destin poignant d'une femme africaine
1974. Kinshasa. La jeune Tshilanda, fille du chef de la sécurité d'un grand hôtel international de la capitale zaïroise, vient d'avoir seize ans. La petite fille s'est métamorphosée en une séduisante jeune femme qui attire tous les regards masculins. L'un de ces hommes, Alan, le très magnétique manager du groupe de James Brown, alors de passage au Zaïre, ne va faire qu'une bouchée de la naïve Tshilanda. Mais, elle vit très mal cette étreinte sauvage. Dépitée, elle se confie à Mike, un musicien noir américain de Harlem, ancien G.I. revenu du Viêt Nam. Elle tisse aussi des liens très forts avec Edouard, un diplomate français et lui raconte tout. Comme Tshilanda est enceinte, il faut lui faire quitter le pays pour éviter le scandale. Mike et Edouard vont l'aider dans cette entreprise. Grâce à l'alliance improbable de ces deux hommes, Tshilanda obtient une green card lui permettant de partir pour les Etats-Unis où elle accouche d'une petite fille, qu'elle baptise du nom de Liberty. Un prénom qui a une valeur de symbole... Elle se retrouve à New York avec Mike qui appartient maintenant au parti des Black Panthers. Lequel réprouve que le musicien se drogue. Pour ne pas être expropriée, Tshilanda fait appel à Edouard. Elle ouvre alors un salon de coiffure qui va jouir d'un grand succès. Puis, par une sombre journée, elle est tuée par un junkie... Comment Liberty va-t-elle surmonter son chagrin ?
Un univers graphique époustouflant
Révélés dans les années 80 par le mensuel A Suivre, Warn's (EricWarnauts) et Raives (Guy Servais) ont la même formation d'arts graphiques. Ils travaillent ensemble depuis 1985, selon un mode de fonctionnement inédit dans la BD: Warn's écrit le scénario, ils dessinent à quatre mains et Raives réalise la mise en couleurs. Leurs talents conjugués donne naissance à un univers graphique et narratif époustouflant qui traduit parfaitement les émotions des personnages. Warn's et Raives vivent tous deux en Belgique, mais connaissent bien l'Afrique. Comme leurs précédents albums l’attestent (Equatoriales, Congo 40, Lettres d'outremer, Kin' la belle et la série l'Orfèvre), ils nourrissent une passion pour le Congo devenu Zaïre. Pour cet opus, la personnalité et la psychologie de chaque personnage a été soigneusement étudiée et fouillée. Il n’y a pas de vrai héros mais des gens simples qui parlent en voix off chacun à leur tour. Les auteurs usent d'une technique subtile pour évoquer le passé: des images grises comme de vieilles photos usées par le temps.
Notre destin est commun...
L'histoire se passe sur plusieurs décennies: du combat de Mohamed Ali contre George Foreman à l'élection de Barack Obama qui clôture son discours d'investiture par une phrase forte: nos histoires sont singulières, mais notre destin est commun. La chronique sociale se mélange avec le contexte politique: le combat des noirs américains et la lutte des femmes pour trouver leur juste place. On sent que l'intrigue est riche d'expériences vécues, sans clichés faciles. Les auteurs font le portrait touchant de deux femmes meurtries par la vie avec un parcours qui se répète: une mère célibataire donne la vie à une jeune fille qui deviendra à son tour une autre mère célibataire. Les deux femmes trouvent leur place dans la réalité: en assimilant deux mondes, deux cultures qui se préoccupent un peu trop de la couleur de la peau. Graphiquement, Warn's et Raives nous offrent des planches superbes magnifiées par des couleurs chatoyantes.
Un roman graphique bouleversant qu'on lit d'une traite avec passion...
